The White House Tape: Nixon and Haldeman's Cover-Up Conversation

"HALDEMAN: Now, on the investigation, you know the Democratic break-in thing, we're back in the problem area because the FBI is not under control... the way to handle this now is for us to have Walters call Pat Gray and just say, 'Stay to hell out of this... this is business here we don't want you to go any further on it.' That the problem is that there will be disclosure of our involvement in the Chilean thing and it tracks back to the Bay of Pigs. NIXON: When you get in — when you get in, I mean, they should call him in and say that we wish for the country, don't go any further into this case — period!"

Transcript of a conversation between President Richard Nixon and Chief of Staff H.R. Haldeman, Oval Office, 23 June 1972. Recorded by the White House taping system. This recording became known as the 'smoking gun' tape when released in August 1974, confirming Nixon's direct involvement in obstructing the FBI investigation of the Watergate break-in.
