"Italians! The Sicilians are fighting against the enemies of Italy. To help them with money, arms and especially men is the duty of every Italian. By coming to their aid, Italians, we do not arm ourselves against a foreign oppressor, but against a domestic one. Against those who, for thirty years, have crushed and oppressed our country. Against those who have squandered our resources, our industries, and our commerce. Against those who have reduced us to this miserable state. Let the cry be 'Italy and Victor Emanuel!' and we will conquer."
Giuseppe Garibaldi, proclamation issued before the Expedition of the Thousand, Genoa, May 1860. Garibaldi led approximately 1,000 volunteer soldiers from Genoa to Sicily to support a Sicilian uprising against the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Within months he had conquered Sicily and Naples.
