Margaret Thatcher: 'The Lady's Not for Turning'

"To those waiting with bated breath for that favourite media catchphrase, the U-turn, I have only one thing to say: You turn if you want to. The lady's not for turning. I say that not only because I believe it but because it is true. Our opponents would like to believe that we have secret plans to pull back from our commitments, to modify our economic strategy under the pressure of events. They are wrong. To abandon the struggle against inflation would be to betray those who are already suffering the most. There is no easy popularity in that course, and we are not looking for easy popularity."

Margaret Thatcher, speech to the Conservative Party conference, Brighton, 10 October 1980. Written with playwright Ronald Millar, the phrase alludes to Christopher Fry's play 'The Lady's Not for Burning'.
