"Heaven and Earth have supported each other and created a harmonious world. However, the Mongols ruled without the authority of Heaven, oppressed the people and corrupted the officials, driving the population to rebellion. The realm has been in chaos for eighteen years. With the military forces I have raised, I have pacified the four quarters. The common people yearn for peace and the land cries for relief. My generals and ministers have urged me to assume the title of Emperor, to correct the relationship between ruler and minister, and to establish a foundation for all ages to come. I have reflected deeply and complied with the will of Heaven and the hearts of the people. I hereby establish the dynasty name as Great Ming."
Zhu Yuanzhang, the Hongwu Emperor, founding proclamation of the Ming Dynasty, Nanjing, 23 January 1368. Zhu was of peasant origin and had risen through a rebel army to overthrow the Mongol Yuan dynasty. He reigned until 1398.
