Aurangzeb's Letter Justifying the Reimposition of the Jizya

"The Hindu community neither pays attention to the procedure of the Law, nor are they in the habit of conforming to reason. So I issue the command that whatever was formerly exempted from jizya should from this day be subject to it, in accordance with the provisions of the Law; and that the officials of the finance department should take from the infidels of the cities and the countryside the jizya according to the terms set down by the Law, with moderation. Any collector who is unjust shall be removed. The purpose of levying the jizya is not to fill the treasury, but to exalt the faith and to abase the infidels, and thus to win the approval of God."

Emperor Aurangzeb, imperial farman (decree) reimposing the jizya on non-Muslims throughout the Mughal Empire, April 1679. Aurangzeb had been emperor since 1658, when he defeated his brothers and imprisoned his father Shah Jahan.
