Seer-i-Kothi — An Indian Account of the Rebellion

"The Englishman does not consult the convenience or feelings of others; he considers only his own advantage... The English have greatly interfered in the religion and customs of Hindustan. Formerly Hindu and Muslim soldiers were treated with every consideration. Now pork is mixed in the atta [flour], bones are ground up and mixed with sugar, hides are used in making up commissariat supplies; whoever eats this food loses his religion. The English are now destroying the religion of all."

Seer-i-Kothi (Mutiny in the Mansion), anonymous account written in Urdu, c.1857. One of a small number of surviving contemporaneous Indian-language accounts of the rebellion.
