Ibn al-Athir on the Fall of Jerusalem to Saladin

"When the Franks saw how Saladin was treating the inhabitants, and that he was not going to kill them or enslave them, they were greatly reassured and hastened to surrender the city... Saladin showed them great generosity. He freed the old Frankish king on account of his age, and gave generous gifts of money to those who were unable to pay the ransom... The whole city was surrendered to Saladin on Friday 27 Rajab 583 [2 October 1187], a Friday and a date of great significance, for it was on a Friday that Jerusalem had fallen to the Franks, and Rajab is the month in which the Prophet made his night journey to Jerusalem."

Ibn al-Athir, The Complete History (Al-Kamil fi'l-Ta'rikh), compiled c.1231. Ibn al-Athir was an Arab historian writing in Mosul; he was not present at Jerusalem but drew on eyewitness accounts.
