The Codex Mendoza: Aztec Tribute Lists

"From the province of Tochtepec, the lords of which are here shown paying tribute: eight hundred loads of rich cacao, two hundred loads of quachtli, four hundred loads of white cotton cloaks, one large feather ornament with its golden shield, forty lip plugs of amber set in gold, twenty four thousand sheets of paper, eight thousand handfuls of green feathers, one feather headdress of rich plumes, and twenty bags of cochineal. This tribute was paid twice yearly."

Codex Mendoza, Folio 47r, compiled c.1541 on the orders of the first Viceroy of New Spain, Antonio de Mendoza. The codex was created by indigenous scribes drawing on pre-conquest tribute records and oral traditions, with Spanish annotations added by a priest.
